Meena:
“So you’re really leaving?” Taz asked.
“Girl, stop looking so sad. You know I’ll be back up here next summer.” I tried to sound as convincing as I could. I hadn’t told anyone, but I was really shaken when I found out Flex had spiked my drink. If it wasn’t for Pablo showing up when he did, who knows what would have happened.
“You aren’t scared moving with an aunt you just found out about?”
Taz’s questions were starting to annoy me, but I didn’t want to argue with her on my last night. “No we talked on the phone earlier. She actually seemed cool. Nothing like Mama Kakes.”
“Meena, get the door!” Grandma yelled.
“Yes, Ma’am.”
Taz continued to help me pack.
“Cuz, I’ll be right back.” I ran to the door. I smiled once I opened and saw Pablo’s gorgeous face.
He smiled right back at me. “Can I talk to you?”
I grabbed his hand and led him into the living room. “Of course. What’s up?”
“I know you’re leaving tomorrow and I just wanted to make sure we’re cool.”
“Pablo, of course we’re cool. If it wasn’t for you getting me to the hospital, I really don’t know what would have happened.”
“Ma, I know I messed up, but I need you to know I love you and there is no one who could ever take your place.
“Aww, baby, I love you too.” I felt torn. This was the first boy I ever loved. I was his Beyoncé and he was my Jay-Z. I wish I could change everything that had happened, but I knew I couldn’t. I needed time to find out who I was and what I wanted. I hope he understood that. Pablo gently touched my cheeks. We were so close I could smell his Juicy Fruit gum.
“Do you love me enough to give me another chance?” he asked.
“Baby, we’ve been through so much. I really feel we need this time apart to find out who we are as individuals, not as Pablo and Meena.
“Girl, I think I’m going to be lost without you.”
“I believe we will both be just fine. This will give you time to work on your music and I can work on my acting. I know if we’re meant to be together we will be together in the end.”
Pablo hugged me so tight I almost couldn’t breathe. When he eventually let go, I was relieved because I knew he understood.
“Meena, I’m not packing all this stuff by myself,” Taz yelled from my room.
I smiled at Pablo. “You want to help me and Taz finish packing?”
“If it means spending more time with you? No doubt.” Once we finished packing, Taz called Mikey. We decided to order pizza and spend my last night up on my grandma’s roof laughing and talking about our futures. Afterward, Taz and I went to catch some z’s.
“Taz, you up?”
“I’m up now what time is it?”
“It’s nine o’clock.”
“Girl, why are you up so early?”
“My aunt is supposed to be here by one o’clock and I can’t go to sleep.
